Jane Jacobs

MARCH 1, 2019

Happy Women’s History month!

Yesterday I learned about Jane Jacobs, who was a very cool lady. Originally a journalist, she introduced ground-breaking ideas in city development through her writing. She advocated for a community-centred planning strategy in New York and Toronto. Her emphasis was on the importance of walking through a city.

Walking has been my main form of experiencing cities, so to me the atmosphere of a neighbourhood at street level is very important. See my journal entry on Mental Maps for more on this.
